You should set up
a file in your word processor to use as a work sheet with the URL's of
the site pages you will be optimizing and submitting (more is better), and
a section for a Keyword List. Use it to record & organize the results of each step in this

Begin by thinking
about your target market and list the 3 search terms (1 - 3 words
each) you believe will best relate to your business to begin your keyword list.
Enter these
keyword search terms at your favorite search engine to find your top ranking
competitors. See what keywords they use in their title tag by looking

Compare these search words to the actual number of searches
to establish the BEST (most traffic) search terms to bring targeted traffic to

Perform a keyword density study of your existing pages to
see which pages will rank best as an entry page for each search term. On your
worksheet under the page URL list the top 3 - 5 relevant keywords or phrases
with the highest density ranking found on each page using this tool
with the Title and Meta tag option unchecked (Off) at Search
Engine World
If needed make copy changes to the verbiage of your pages to have words
relevant to the topic of each page at the top of this page keyword density list and re-check using the tool at Search

Meta Tags When creating Meta tags for your website, do not infringe
on other companies trademarks or copyrights. We recommend you develop your
tags in word to check the spelling and character count and then copy the
verbiage into notepad and place it between the HTML tags shown below.
Title Tag
should be between 40 and 80 characters and contain the most important keywords
for your business and the individual page based on your studies. Include your
business name plus keywords on your home and contact page title but not on the
other pages. Put the most important page words first and repeat a different word
twice in each page title. This appears as the tile in most search engine results
so do this in a way that is readable but don't waste many words on filler (and,
or...) or sales copy (new, big, beautiful...) and use only commas, or -
dashes as symbols. Try to focus each page on different target keywords and
use your state and city in some of the titles if you have a localized business.

Meta Tag should be 150 - 200 characters and may contain your business name,
several keywords, and describe your web site and the page it is attached to,
here you may use filler words and sales copy, but not symbols as they confuse

Keyword Meta
Tag may be up to 850 characters but it is not used by most search
engines any more, it is optional though I recommend using it on your main pages
with a listing of the top words on your page keyword density study separated by

or phrase, you may also put in any common misspelling of your keywords, and your
business name and location. Place your finished copy into this HTML Meta tag.

and directories
Use The Links and Logos to the left to submit your site to the search engines
and directories. For the Yahoo Directory You may be able to get a free listing
in a non-profit category for a good informational page, or you also may be eligible
for a regional directory. You may find that some of the search engines no longer
offer a free submission.
Paid Express Submissions
To insure that your pages will be included in the search engine listings and
in a timely manner we strongly suggest that you use our Express
Submission service.
Link Popularity
Building
Recently one of the important factors in ranking high on search engines is link popularity. It's not enough to
have a good website, other sites have to point back to you. The search engines
assume that if your site is good enough for others to link to you, then you must have
better site than your competitors that have less links pointing to them from
other websites.
Building link popularity is hard work. I suggest that you use Google and type in
your industry and specific products followed by terms that will lead to
possible link pages. Try terms like, add URL, links, directory, directories,
portal.... So for example to find good places to build the link popularity for
this site I would do a search on "Internet marketing add URL" or
"search engine optimization links".
Then go to the
sites you find in your search and look for an "add URL" or add site" link to submit your site. In most cases you will have to send an
email to the webmaster and ask for a link and explain why you believe your
